Jackson's 13-year playing career, spent primarily with the New York Knicks, prepared him for his coaching challenge. With stars Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere and Cazzie Russell, New York won not by featuring individual greatness but by maximizing collective achievement.

Jackson, a low-scoring specialty player, learned to understand the value of each player as a part of the whole and how an overdependence on any one player can cause a team to fall apart. With his broad, pointy shoulders and herky-jerky movements, Jackson was an oddity on the court who was nicknamed "Head 'n' Shoulders," although in true Jackson style he used his limited skills to the maximum. He also picked up valuable experience as an award-winning head coach in the Continental Basketball Association and as an assistant coach in Chicago under the fiery Doug Collins.

Phil then went on to be the head coach for the Chicago Bulls. His experience was spent in guiding the Chicago Bulls to an astounding 6 NBA Championships, 1991-1993 and 1996-1998. When Phil announced his decision to step down as head coach of the Bulls in June of 1998, he held the highest all-time career winning percentage (.740) among all NBA coaches.

On June 16, 1999, Phil Jackson signed a five-year contract to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, becoming the 15th head coach in Lakers' history. Jackson guided the Lakers to three titles in his first stint as their head coach from 1999-2004.

Phil Jackson re-joined the Los Angeles Lakers as their head coach on June 14, 2005, less than one year after he left the team to take a year off from coaching. He continues to lead his team by the techniques he learned early in his career. Jackson, the NBA's career leader in playoff victories and playoff winning percentage, has won nine NBA titles, tying Red Auerbach for the most all-time.

Phil is constantly asked to share his motivational techniques -- not just with other coaches, but with people in all walks of life. As a response to this demand, he wrote Sacred Hoops. Sacred Hoops presents Phil's philosophy of mindful basketball--and how its principles can be used to promote a deeper understanding of life. As head coach of the world champion Chicago Bulls, he developed an innovative approach to the game that flies in the face of the self-centered dogma that has imprisoned the soul of American sports since the 1950s when Vince Lombardi gave his first winning-is-everything pep talk. Phil's system centers on the power of awareness and selfless teamwork to achieve success on the court and to cultivate mindfulness in everyday life. As he puts it, “Awareness is everything. Being aware is more important than being smart.”

During the off-season, Phil Jackson lives in Montana. When Phil is not fly-fishing in Montana or riding his motorcycles cross-country, he shares his motivational techniques as a speaker touring the world explaining his innovative theories of effective team building.
